Preventive Check-Up

Insurance covers a preventive check-up with each registered general practitioner every two years. At our clinic, this exam is divided into two parts. The first part begins with a nurse who will check blood pressure, vision, height, weight, conduct a cognitive function test (for older age groups), and perform an ECG. Afterward, the doctor will carry out the second part of the examination.

It’s essential to attend on time and use this 50-minute session for a thorough discussion of any issues, updates, and risk factors—this time is for you!

Check-Up Overview

During the check-up, we’ll review your full medical history, including recent changes, potential risk factors, and occupational hazards. We focus on family and personal histories of cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, diabetes, lipid disorders, cancer, allergies, and any addictions (such as alcohol or tobacco). Additionally, we’ll ask about social factors, past surgeries, injuries, and changes in medications since your last visit. You’re welcome to prepare and send any changes in your history via email beforehand.

Vaccinations will be reviewed as well. In the Czech Republic, the only regular vaccine is tetanus, which requires a booster every 10–15 years; however, additional vaccines are also available at our clinic.

Women will be asked about regular gynecological check-ups, including annual PAP tests to screen for cervical cancer. Women over 45 will also be asked about mammograms within the last two years, with referrals provided if needed. Younger women may choose a preventive breast ultrasound.

For men, we will check if prostate screening has been conducted, which is recommended for men aged 50–69.

Smokers may be evaluated for lung cancer screening, particularly those between 55 and 74 who have a history of heavy smoking (20 or more cigarettes daily for 20 years, or 40 daily for 10 years).

For patients over 50, we’ll check if an occult blood test has been conducted to detect hidden blood in stool. Insurance covers this annually from ages 50 to 55, after which patients can continue every two years or undergo a screening colonoscopy.

We’ll then perform a comprehensive physical examination. The nurse will repeat certain checks (blood pressure, vision, height, weight, cognitive function test, and ECG), while the doctor will assess the heart, lungs, abdomen, extremities, perform a basic neurological exam, and conduct a skin check (especially for patients over 40). Rectal exams are recommended at each preventive visit starting at age 40.

The doctor will also review any examination results required by decree and arrange necessary tests if they haven’t been done at the recommended intervals. According to Ministry of Health Decree No. 70/2012 Coll., patients are entitled to specific exams during each preventive visit:

  • A urine analysis

  • Total cholesterol and fractions (covered at ages 18, 30, 40, 50, 60 for those not under current treatment)

  • Blood glucose every two years starting at age 40 (more frequent if under treatment)

  • Kidney function tests (serum creatinine and glomerular filtration rate) every four years for patients over 50 with diabetes, hypertension, or cardiovascular issues

The doctor may decide to order other tests based on a personalized assessment, though only the doctor managing your care can select these exams. Patients also have the option to pay for any extra tests they wish to undergo that are not medically necessary, including additional lab tests, imaging, or rehabilitative services.

We may also recommend an eye exam, including intraocular pressure measurement for patients over 45, as well as a dental check-up if it hasn’t been performed. Other tests, not covered by public health insurance, are not included in the routine preventive examination.
