Stool Test for Hidden (Occult)

Blood (FOBT - Fecal Occult Blood Test)

Our clinic offers a modern immunochemical stool test to detect hidden blood, which plays an essential role in the early detection of colorectal cancer as part of secondary prevention efforts.

Procedure:

1. Preparation: No specific diet or food restrictions are needed before the test.

2. Sample Collection: You’ll receive a collection kit at our clinic, which you’ll use to collect a small stool sample at home. The nurse will provide instructions on how to collect the sample properly. Be sure to store the sample in the refrigerator before and after collection, and avoid allowing it to come into contact with water.

3. Returning the Sample: Bring the sample tube back to our clinic within one to three days for analysis. Results are processed using an automated device, and you will be informed of the outcome promptly.

Insurance Coverage:

• Ages 50 to 55: The test is covered annually by insurance.

• Ages 55 and older: You may choose to continue with this test every two years or opt for a screening colonoscopy instead.

Follow-Up After Positive Results:

A positive result does not necessarily indicate cancer, but it does warrant further examination:

• Colonoscopy: This test is used to inspect the colon for sources of bleeding. A flexible tube with a camera allows doctors to view the colon’s lining and, if needed, collect tissue samples. A colonoscopy is standard for positive FOBT results to determine the cause of hidden bleeding.

For Younger Patients:

Patients under 50 who would like to undergo the FOBT can do so as a self-paid service.

This screening test is an important tool for early intervention and helps ensure timely and appropriate treatment when needed. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to our clinic staff for guidance.
