Information for EHIC cardholders
We provide care for holders of European Health Insurance Cards (EHIC) or the equivalent Provisional Certificate.
We are able to provide care on the same terms as is provided to insured Czech citizens, provided the care is necessary in the light of the length of your stay in the Czech Republic and provided that you have not come to the Czech Republic with the intention of seeking healthcare.
We strongly advise you, even if you are only staying in the Czech Republic for a few days, and you wish to seek public medical care based on your EHIC (whether from us or from any other healthcare facility), to apply to one of the health insurance companies first for a Certificate of Registration ("Potvrzení o registraci").
This approach not only saves us considerable administrative effort but also means that you will have a much higher chance of receiving publicly-financed care from other bodies - to receive prescription medicines for the standard charge of 30 CZK is, in our experience, almost impossible without the Certificate of Registration.
For more details on how the system works, contact details for the health insurance companies etc. please click here. We recommend that you apply for your Certificate of Registration with VZP - the nearest branch that offers this service is located at the address Na Perštýně 6, Praha 1 (just around the corner from Tesco "my" at Národní třída; you can reach it easily from the surgery by metro - it is just a few minutes walk from Můstek metro station, four stops away). It is open at the following hours:
| Day | From | To | |
| Monday | 8.00am | - | 6.00pm |
| Tuesday | 8.00am | - | 6.00pm |
| Wednesday | 8.00am | - | 6.00pm |
| Thursday | 8.00am | - | 6.00pm |
| Friday | 8.00am | - | 4.00pm |
If you are for any reason unable to apply Certificate of Registration, you are entitled to care based on a so-called "Certificate of Entitlement" ("Potvrzení o nároku"). If you wish to obtain healthcare on this basis from our surgery, please download the form, complete it in eletronic form (paying attention to the automatic help that will guide you in each field) and email it before you come to the surgery to: ordinace@young.co.cz. If possible, please phone to make an appointment on 222 366 166 and bring with you your EHIC card plus your personal identification (passport or ID card). If not, please come on working days between 8am and 10am and wait your turn in the waiting room.
Please note that we do not accept patients with Certificates of Registration or EHIC cards in our evening surgeries, because the doctor may need to verify your claim with the relevant health insurance company before treating you. Also, whilst we are able to provide copies of the Certificate of Entitlement to support your claim for prescription medicines, laboratory tests, etc. we cannot guarantee that other healthcare providers will respect these. Furthermore, if our doctor considers the consultation to be non-essential in the light of the length of your stay in the Czech Republic, or after consultation with the health insurance company, you will be asked to cover the cost of the consultation in cash (500 CZK for a consultation of up to 20 minutes, and 250 CZK for each 10 minutes thereafter).
Finally, we draw to your attention the fact that we receive no compensation from the health insurance system for the substantial additional administrative demands associated with processing the Certificate of Entitlement - we can bill for your care exactly as if you were a Czech patient, with the added complication that payment is often delayed. We also bear a residual risk that the care we provide will not be refunded at all. With this in mind, we ask you to consider making a contribution to the charities that we support and suggest that a donation of 300 CZK (12 Euro) per Certificate of Entitlement is appropriate if you do not send the pre-filled certificate in advance, or 150 CZK (6 Euro) per Certificate of Entitlement if you do email the pre-filled certificate in advance.
Remember, our preference is for you to come with a Certificate of Registration (which you can obtain very easily at the health insurance office next door to us, see above) - in which case we will not ask you for any charitable donation!
