Charitable projects

The surgery supports the following two charitable causes:

• the home hospice charity The Homecoming, and
• three orphanages in Kinshasa, the Democratic Republic of Congo
  (by some measures the world's poorest country).

The Homecoming

Our life is a voyage. It has a beginning and also an end, both belonging to this voyage and, to a great degree, determining it. When we have plenty of strength and briskly walk through our life, we know how to be brave and full of joy. But when coming to the world and when leaving it, we usually don’t have much strength. We are fragile. We need those who understand us close by. Hospices all over the world are trying to respond to this ordinary human need for closeness, dignity and understanding.

The Homecoming hospice civic association was established in 2001. Its members are experts in the area of the palliative medicine, people from other professions and important persons of public life, who endeavor to extend and improve the quality of care for dying in the Czech Republic. Activities of the Association focuse on two, self-complementing areas:

• To establish and operate the home care hospice CESTA DOMŮ in Prague, offering concrete help to families, who have decided to care for their dying family member at home.
• To aim to introduce structural social and legislative changes, that would make it possible to extend quality care for dying everywhere in the Czech Republic.  

The Orphanages

The "Grace de Dieu" orphanages in Kinshasa care for around 150 children who would otherwise join the thousands of others on the streets or worse. They are in dire need of basic infrastructure such as beds and mattresses - in a situation where there is no regular income even to feed the children, it is difficult to find money for projects such as these.
